What is Telerehabilitation?

Telerehabilitation or Telehealth is the use of information/communication technologies (such as telephone, email, videoconferencing) to allow you and your physiotherapist to deliver care at a distance when an in-person visit is not possible.

How will it work?

You will set up an appointment time with your physiotherapist where you will have one-to-one video consultation. The following will take place:

  • Review of your injuries – we will go over your concerns and reason for seeking physiotherapy services, as well as review pertinent medical history
  • Assessment – range of motion assessment and functional movements
  • Treatment – Education and exercise recommendations will be provided based off of findings during assessment

Is Telerehabilitation for me?

Telerehabilitation can be helpful for many people including individuals with chronic conditions, sports-related injuries, or who just recently had surgery. It can also be helpful if you are looking to work on your mobility or prepare a program for injury prevention. Education and exercise are two of our primary treatment tools we use as physiotherapists and Telerehab allows us to continue to provide these tools from a distance.

There are some shortcomings to Telehealth, as an in-person assessment is always preferred. If we determine that an in-person appointment is required we will schedule one as soon as possible.

If you are still unsure if Telerehabilitation is for you, please send us an email and we can answer any questions you may have.

What do you need?

Just a computer/smartphone that has audio and visual capabilities and some comfortable clothing!

What are the risks?

The biggest risk is Privacy and the potential for security breaches. Luckily, Jane, our online portal, is very concerned about patient safety and security. Jane offers secure, HIPAA compliant (as well as FIPPA, PIPEDA/PHIPA, PIPA) data transfer. All data is encrypted in transit, and nothing is ever recorded or stored.

Please be advised that some insurance companies may not accept Telehealth as Physiotherapy treatment. The best way to determine this is to contact your insurance provider.
